Recall Alert: Subaru Legacy, Outback, and Impreza May Start By Themselves

Last month, Subaru announced a recall of model year 2010 to 2013 Legacy and Outback vehicles with an automatic or CTV transmission with an Audiovox remote engine starter, as well as certain model year 2012 to 2013 Impreza and 2013 XV Crosstrek vehicles equipped with the same accessory. The reason for the recall is that the engine may start without pressing the remote engine starter. However, original equipment keyless entry fobs integrated on the vehicle key are not affected by the recall.

If the RES key fob is dropped, it may malfunction and accidentally transmit an engine start request without the button ever being pressed. If this were to happen, the engine could start and run for up to fifteen minutes, or start and stop until the fob battery is depleted. It could also run until the vehicle runs out of fuel. When parked in an enclosed area, carbon monoxide buildup is a real danger, causing asphyxiation to whoever encounters the noxious gases.

As the recall is expected to begin by the end of April 2013, Subaru will soon to begin notifying owners. Dealers will replace all RES key fobs at no cost to the owner. Subaru is available for contact by phone at (800) 782-2783. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline is also available by phone at (888) 327-4236 or online at www.safercar.gov. The Subaru recall campaign number is WQF-42.
