If you were expecting the 2014 BMW 4 Series to look a whole lot different than the concept that first debuted on U.S. at the Detroit Auto Show in January, sorry. Not happening.
Regardless, we now know what the 2014 BMW 4 Series will look like in production form, as it was photographed on the streets baring its sheetmetal to the world. We were told by a source in BMW that the car’s biggest differences would be its bumpers, which proved accurate. The production car, like the concept, has a small, vent-like scoop on the side that we’re pretty sure isn’t there for anything more than aesthetics.
The spied vehicle, while unbadged looks to be a six-cylinder 4 Series, which you can tell from its single round exhaust pipe on either side of the bumper. BMW will likely call it the 435i. BMW will also adopt the 240-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder from the 328i, and it may get a diesel engine as well. Rear-wheel drive will be standard while all-wheel drive will also be available.
BMW has recently gone towards naming all of its sedans with odd numbers and all of its coupes “Gran Coupes†with even numbers. The current BMW 3 Series will not spawn a 3 Series coupe or convertible; that’s why there’s the 4 Series. It may seem blasphemous that the next-generation high-performance version will be called the M4, but BMW representatives have said that it’s not a big concern for the company. People know what they want to buy regardless of its name.
Also, in BMW’s hierarchical naming structure, bigger numbers mean higher price tags. As the 3 Series starts at around $ 33,000 for the 320i and $ 37,000 for the 328i, the 428i will undoubtedly start at a higher price point, with the current 3 Series coupe costing $ 2,000 more than a comparable sedan. We expect to see the 2014 BMW 4 Series make its official debut sometime soon, if not by the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
