Today, Mitsubishi announced that it will be unveiling a new vehicle, called Concept G4, at the Bangkok International Motor Show at the end of the month. Joining the Mitsubishi Concept G4 in Bangkok will be the GR-HEV sport utility truck concept, which is currently on display at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.
Mitsubishi has big plans for the Concept G4 sedan as it plans to sell this new compact vehicle across the globe. This new compact sedan will feature Mitsubishi’s next-generation styling which can be seen in the redesigned headlights, taillights, and front grille. The Concept G4 sedan features a short nose to help with outward visibility and Mitsubishi says it will help with the vehicle’s maneuverability, too. The teaser image, shown above, doesn’t give away too much information, but Mitsubishi promises that the Concept G4 sedan will feature sleek bodylines to help with aerodynamics. If Mitsubishi really has its way, the Concept G4?s interior is also going to be one of the biggest in its class.
The Mitsubishi Concept G4 also promises to achieve class-leading fuel consumption figures due in part to its Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution high-tensile steel body structure. Power comes from a 1.2-liter MIVEC engine which is mated to a CVT that features a sub-geartrain. With less weight onboard, Mitsubishi claims the Concept G4 compact sedan will be agile and fun to drive. Handling, stability, and comfort have also received some attention and also benefit from the reduction in weight.
With the larger interior, Mitsubishi says passenger comfort has been bolstered especially by the high hip points and more rear leg room. Bigger door openings make it easier to get in and out of the Concept G4 as well, something compact sedans in today’s market lack.
Automotive.com’s take: It’s no secret that the Bangkok International Motor Show isn’t a hotbed for all-new vehicle debuts (let alone vehicle debuts in general). However, we like that Mitsubishi is pushing forward even after being so quiet in the North American market over the past 12 months. Hopefully the Concept G4 is the much-needed spark missing from Mitsubishi’s current lineup. Only time will tell though.
