Good-bye NSX, Hello Again, R8: Tony Stark Dumping Acura, Going Back to Audi for Iron Man 3

To be a superhero, you need a few key components: cool, bad-guy beating technology; a beautiful woman to come home to; and of course, a few supercars at your disposal. For example, Batman, who doubles as eccentric billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne by day, relies on a Lamborghini Murcielago when he’s trying to deflect attention. Tony Stark, another billionaire without parents, doubles as Iron Man when the world’s current events call for it. When Stark isn’t fighting off The Mandarin or Ivan Vanko, he’s riding around in an Audi R8 or an Acura NSX (in The Avengers). For the third installment in the Iron Man series, Stark is going back to the Audi R8, which makes sense seeing how the all-new Acura NSX is still a few years off from even enter ing production.

Iron Man 3, which hits theatres May 3, has a healthy dose of Audi vehicles including the R8, R8 Spyder, A8, S5, and the Q7. If Acura’s product placement strategy in The Avengers movie is any indication, expect a lot of Audis to blow up for no apparent reason in Iron Man 3. Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as Iron Man and Gwyneth Paltrow returns for a third time to be his leading lady. If you pay attention, Pepper Pots, as Paltrow’s character is known as in the film, is seen driving an Audi S7.

“This is a strategic collaboration for us,” said Loren Angelo, General Manager of Brand Marketing for Audi of America. “Similar to the position of the R8 as an innovation leader, Iron Man’s character consistently evolves throughout the trilogy as he masterminds new trends in technology and engineering.”

In the third installment of the Iron Man trilogy, Stark and his alter-ego are pitted against The Mandarin, a megalomaniac hell-bent on ruling the world. Iron Man’s archenemy starts by destroying Stark’s personal life before moving on to the rest of the world. If the first two installments of Iron Man and The Avengers taught us anything, it’s that Iron Man will be pushed to the limit while trying to defeat his foe.

The third installment of the Iron Man trilogy opens up in theaters nationwide on May 3. This is expected to be another homerun for parent company Marvel Comics, as Iron Man 2 raked in $ 312 million while the first Iron Man movie brought in $ 318 million. Check out a trailer for Iron Man 3 below.
