Having been on the market for the better part of the last eight years, the 2013 Nissan Frontier gets some subtle changes to boost fuel economy and one not-so-subtle change: a price drop. The base 2013 Nissan Frontier S King Cab, powered by a 152-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with rear-wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission comes in at $ 18,835, including $ 845 for destination and handling. Thatâs $ 1,270 less than the 2012 version.
The mid-range Nissan Frontier SV Crew Cabâ"thatâs four full-size doorsâ"also starts at a lower price: $ 24,835, a whopping $ 1,450 less than the outgoing model.
Along with those price changes, Nissan adds a $ 24,605 Desert Runner model into the mix with the King Cab, $ 25,855 for the Crew Cab, competing squarely against Toyotaâs Tacoma PreRunner. Most models stay close to their 2012 prices or go up slightly. More importantly, fuel economy has risen 1 to 2 mpg per vehicle on most Frontier models, owing to reduced engine friction and a new aerodynamic lip spoiler on the back of every Frontierâs tailgate.
Optionally available on the 2013 Nissan Frontier is a punchy 4.0-liter V-6 that doles out 261 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torqueâ"pulling forceâ"equipped with a five-speed automatic and two- or four-wheel drive. With the Ford Ranger no longer being sold in the U.S. and a new small pickup still being at least a year away from General Motors, Nissan has stepped into a wide hole once dominated by the domestic brands and exploited it, picking up sales despite the Frontierâs aging design. Still robust, yet a bit thirsty for its size, the Frontier is poised to gain the Orkin man market Ford left behind. Ford says the new world Ranger, sold abroad, is too close in size to the F-150 and would eat at its profit margins if it were sold in the U.S. The U.S.-built Frontier is paid for after years of lingering on the market, allowing Nissan to reap the benefits of offering a still pretty competitive midsize p ickup at a lower price.
