Return of the Box: 2014 Volvo S60 and XC60 Get New, Squared-Off Looks, Refreshed Interiors

The 2014 model year looks to be a big one for Volvo as it updates nearly all of its lineup with refreshed looks and nicer interior appointments. No models get as much of a seeing to as the 2014 Volvo S60 and XC60, though.

The first thing you’ll notice are their new front ends with blocky headlights and wider grilles. Volvo says it makes the car and its crossover companion look lower and wider overall. It hearkens back to the brick-shaped Volvos of the 1970s through the early 1990s. To be honest, it looks a little bland.

But Volvo fancies it as getting rid of unnecessary clutter. All right then.

The interior of each vehicle undergoes the same sort of simplification, with newly available sport seats and different wood, leather, cloth, and aluminum appointments throughout the interior. They both also come with a revised Sensus infotainment system that can act as a mobile wi-fi hotspot. On the outside of the Volvo S60 and XC60 have integrated headlight washers that no longer sit atop the front bumper, exhaust outlets that are integrated into the rear bumper, and 19-inch wheels that were previously only available on R-Design models.

Exclusive to the S60 is a choice of three suspension settingsâ€"Touring, Dynamic, and Sportâ€"previously only available on R-Design cars. The XC60 will come with Volvo’s Corner Traction Control torque-vectoring system.

The Rest of the Lineup

Volvo is also introducing revised versions of its larger S80 and XC70 for the U.S. They, too, have revised styling, albeit with subtler touches. Most of their upgrades come in the interior, with Bridge of Weir leather and revised trim and content throughout, such as the updated Sensus infotainment system that’s also available in the S60 and XC60.

The S80 and XC70 have seen a fair amount of duty, having been on sale since the mid-2000s without much updating. All of the new vehiclesâ€"including ones that will not be available in the U.S. like the V60 and V70â€"will be first shown at next month’s Geneva Motor Show, going on sale shortly thereafter.
