Rumored for quite some time, officials of Mercedes-Benz announced their plan to add a completely new SUV model to the production line at the Alabama plant. According to Tuscaloosa News reports, the new model will be added to the 2015 line-up. Sharing engines with the recently redesigned M-Class, this new crossover SUV will be a high-performance model. It will be reportedly be called the MLC, although no official model name has been given.
Dieter Zetsche, chairman of Mercedes-Benzâs parent firm Daimler, told shareholders at a meeting earlier this week in Stuttgart, Germany that this new SUV would be destined to the be fifth model produced at the Mercedes-Benz auto assembly factory in Alabama. Currently, the Tuscaloosa plant produces the M-Class midsize SUV, R-Class large crossover, and GL-Class large SUV. In 2014, Mercedes-Benz will start production of the C-Class sedan at the Alabama factory as well.
Also said at the annual shareholders meeting, preparations for the production of another SUV are currently under way at the plant in Vance, lying about twenty miles east of the Tuscaloosa Mercedes-Benz auto assembly plant. The new Mercedes-Benz crossover SUV is set to go against the BMW X6, as well as the Lexus GX460, Land Rover LR4, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.
