If you haven’t noticed, Chevrolet has been busy lately launching vehicles like the Spark, Sonic, and most recently the redesigned Silverado and Corvette Stingray. You can now add another one to that list: the 2014 Chevrolet SS. We’ve already seen its Australian cousin, the Holden VF Commodore, but today we finally get to see the American version, also known as the 2014 Chevrolet SS. This new V-8, rear-wheel drive sedan is the first vehicle of its kind to sport a Golden Bowtie since 1996. Almost two decades later, the 2014 Chevrolet SS joins the likes of the Camaro, Caprice police car, and the aforementioned VF Commodore, all of which share the same glo bal rear-wheel drive architecture.
Chevrolet’s goal with the 2014 SS was to deliver a vehicle with a firm grip on the road courtesy of better handling and balance. Handling was bolstered by nearly a 50/50 weight distribution, a low center of gravity, and an aluminum hood and trunk lid that’s 30 percent lighter than its traditional steel panel counterpart. The 2014 Chevrolet SS sits on a sport tuned suspension and features a MacPherson strut up front and a multilink independent suspension in the rear. An electronic power steering system helps with spirited driving both on and off the track.
Exterior styling cues boast a muscular stance with some help from Chevy’s engineers, who staggered the front and rear wheels to give the SS a more aggressive look. The aluminum hood features a “power bulge,†which Chevy hopes will alert onlookers that the SS packs a serious punch. From behind, the SS utilizes a tear-drop shape to help with aerodynamics. Chrome accents, high intensity headlights, and LED daytime running lights all adorn the outside of the SS as well.
Inside, Chevy promises the SS can fit five adults comfortably with 42 inches of legroom up front, and 39 inches in the rear. Standard features include leather seats, eight-way power adjustable front bucket seats with side bolsters, and SS emblems stitched into the soft-touch instrument panel. The instrument panel features two different types of chrome finishes;  can be finished in your choice of a satin gloss or bright chrome. Other standard features include a color Chevy’s MyLink and next-gen navigation system, a Bose nine-speaker sound system, a color heads-up display, push-button start, electronic stability control, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone alert, and a back-up camera with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
Underneath the hood is a 6.2-liter V-8, putting out an expected 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. It’s the only engine available in the SS, and the only transmission will be a six-speed automatic with TAPshift paddles mounted on the side of the steering wheel. Brembo brakes are standard and are tasked with bringing 19-inch forged aluminum wheels to a halt.
The 2014 Chevrolet SS will hit dealership lots in the fourth quarter of 2013 and pricing is expected to be announced closer to the release date.
