Disclaimer: I own a 2.0l Escape SEL AWD, so I'm obviously a bit biased..
So it should come as not surprise that I like the Ford's looks a bit better than the Mazda's. Â Especially the interior. Â I think it's mainly the display area on the upper dash of the CX-5 that bothers me. The way it's integrated just seems off. Â If they fixed that I might say it was a tossup for the inside.
You may be right about the fuel economy, based on real world reports. I've read a lot of complaints for the Ecoboosts, though my own experiences with the 2.0l don't match others'. Â I've seen between 22-just over 29 for an AWD 2.0l Escape, with the average being around 25.5 so far.
C ostwise: I just priced the cheapest I could get either vehicle with the following engine (2WD, since that's less costly than AWD)-
Mazda- CX-5 Touring FWD, 2.5l 6sp auto, $ 25,410 with destination (with incentives of between $ 500 and $ 1000 total, in my area right now: best case- $ 24,410)
Ford- Escape SE FWD, 2.0l 6sp auto, $ 26,560 with destination (there are also incentives beween $ 1500 and $ 2500 total, available in my area for this car right now: best case- $ 24,060)
Not that much difference, but, as you can see, it's not too hard to beat Mazda's price. In reality, I'd say you can pay roughly the same for whichever you choose, with just a few minutes haggling. So the cost isn't really a factor..
I guess if you like more fuel economy with less zoom, go with the 2.5l CX-5, if it's the other way around, go for the 2.0l Escape.
