And just like that, the 2013 North American International Auto Show has come and gone. Some notable vehicle to debut in Detroit included the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, 2014 Lexus IS, and the party-crashing 2015 Ford Atlas Concept. The Detroit auto show also brought us a few concept debuts that may make it into production, and some that were used to show where future design plans are headed. Despite being production ready or not, one thing is for certain: the 2013 North American International Auto Show brought out the heavy hitters. Below, we’ve compiled a few vehicles, both production ready and not-so-much, that we’ll be thinking about for a while.
2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
This one was kind of a no-brainer. Leading up to the show, there were months and months of speculation and rumors surrounding the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette. It wasn’t until the vehicle was unveiled that it was made known the Stingray moniker would return. The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray brings a slew of new styling and technology along with it including a completely revamped interior, more aggressive exterior styling, and Eco mode. Yes, you read that last part right. The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has new V-8 active cylinder management, which kills off half of the cylinders when they’re not needed.
2015 Ford Atlas Concept
Perhaps the one vehicle that openly tried (and possibly succeeded) to steal the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray’s thunder was the 2015 Ford Atlas Concept. Rumored to be a pretty close interpretation of the 2015 Ford F-150, the Atlas Concept boasts Ford Super Duty looks with a touch of SVT Raptor styling. Ford had its collective back agai nst the wall, feeling the heat from crosstown rivals Chevrolet and Ram unveiling new or heavily refreshed pickups, and decided to debut its next-generation F-150 which was thinly veiled as the Atlas Concept. Ford didn’t get into many specifics on the Atlas Concept but it did share about the same amount of information that’s known about the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, and that’s due into production early this year. One thing’s for certain, if the 2015 Ford Atlas Concept’s design language carries over into the next-gen F-150, the Blue Oval Boys hit a walk-off grand slam.
2014 Lexus IS
Upon seeing the 2014 Lexus IS for the first time, everyone on staff let out a collective “awe†in amazement. Catching our eyes first, obviously, was the edgy exterior styling which is most prevalent on the spindle grille. Some other key features on the 2014 Lexus IS include a 2.5-liter V-6 or a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, available all-wheel drive, an eight-s peed automatic transmission, and a longer wheelbase that gives way to more rear seat space. The 2014 Lexus IS represents a significant refresh for a vehicle that hasn’t seen one in several years. If the 2014 Lexus IS represents where the luxury automaker is headed design-wise, count us among those who will be watching with great interest.
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee didn’t get a jarring refresh like some other vehicles on this list, but it’s the refinements and the addition of a diesel engine that lands it on our list. Let’s start off with the 3.0-liter diesel engine that will be available on the Summit , Overland, and Limited trim levels. When equipped with it, the Grand Cherokee boasts a range of 720 miles and can now pull up to 7,200 pounds. Another noticeable exterior styling change is the Chrysler 300-inspired headlights that will appear on the Summit and SRT trims. The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT also receives some welcomed additions including an eight-speed automatic transmission, the 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment screen, and a tweaked steering wheel that will now feature the SRT logo on it.
Acura NSX Concept
Yes, the return of the Acura NSX has already been made known. Yes, it was already shown off at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit last year. So why is Acura rolling out its super car again at the same auto show one year later? Because the last one didn’t have an interior and this latest concept does, of course. In fact, this in terior is considered a big deal because it shows that Acura is another step closer to letting the NSX back into the wild. This NSX concept features an interior that pays homage to the one it’s replacing, as a matter of fact. Will we see NSX Concept 3.0 at the 2014 North American International Auto Show? We sure hope not, we just want to drive it already.
