If you’re into the pickup truck segment, then you know that it’s hard to look anywhere on the road without coming across a Ford F-150. Even if you’re not into cars or trucks whatsoever, you know when you see one. You’re not alone though as the Ford F-Series has been the best-selling vehicle for over 30 years. In 2012 alone, Ford managed to move 645,316 F-Series trucks, or 10.3 percent more than in 2011. So what, right? Well today marks the 65th anniversary of the Ford F-Series truck going on sale and when you sell 32 million vehicles, or just below 500,000 vehicles a year, it’s an important milestone.
The Ford F-Series spans 65 years over 12 generations and while lucky No. 13 isn’t due out until the 2015 model year, we’ve already
had a chance to see what the Blue Oval Boys have up their collective sleeve. The next-gen F-150, currently known as the 2015 Ford Atlas Concept, was alrea dy shown off earlier this week at the 2013 North American International Auto Show. While it was widely assumed that the Detroit auto show would be the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray’s coming out party, the Atlas Concept did its very best to steal the show (and some think it just might have). Over the course of its life, the Ford F-Series has won almost every industry award including Motor Trend‘s Truck of the Year (most recently in 2012), as well as the prestigious “Truck of Texas†and countless Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Pick awards.
Throughout the years, Ford has released special edition F-150 models including the Harley Davidson edition, SVT Lighting, and most recently, the SVT Raptor. The SVT Lighting sported a 5.8-liter V-8 engine rated at 240 horsepower and was produced from 1999 to 2004. The next model to roll out of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team garage was the wildly popular Raptor, which was introduced for the 2010 model year. The Raptor continues to live on for the 2013 model year and remains popular. A 6.2-liter V-8 engine producing 411 hp powers the Raptor and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. While it’s not the most sensible vehicle to own, it’s definitely found a niche’ in the pickup truck segment.
